Bre Ana is a first-year apprentice with the Iron Workers. She says the best part of being an apprentice is getting to see the results of your work. “Even after an 8-hour shift, you can see your work. The beams you raised, the welding you finished. I never dreamed there was a job like this out there.”
Bre Ana is currently working at the Metro Transit Rail Yard on Hiawatha Avenue and says it is her favorite job so far. “When I got there, they hadn’t started the iron work yet. I got to be there when the first beams were put in place and I get to see a project from start to finish. Every day is different, and every day there’s something to learn.”
She says that one of the most important things about her apprenticeship is that she is earning while she learns her trade. “Before becoming and apprentice, I needed financial help from my family. Being an apprentice has helped me become more financially stable. I recently just financed a car for the first time.”
Bre Ana also appreciates the support she received from the union hall, business managers and journeymen. “I really feel that people are there for me, supporting me, making sure that I succeed.”
